O.k. somehow I missed this.

From the article:

Google today is announcing strengthened protections for Android developers publishing apps to its Google Play store. The changes are a part of Google’s broader efforts at keeping low-quality and unsafe apps out of its app store and off consumers’ devices, which also recently included the launch of a new real-time app scanning feature to combat malicious apps. Today, the company says it will now require new Android developers with personal accounts to test their app with a minimum of 20 people for at least 2 weeks prior to publication. It additionally plans to increase its investment in the app review processes, warning of potential slowdowns in approvals for a small number of apps as these changes roll out.

Just when you thought Google couldn't get any worse, they make a pretty arbitrary rule thats going to kill independent app developers.

I've worked at startups with less than 20 employees, most of whom used iOS on mobile devices, but developed android apps that had a (somewhat) substantial user base - but forcing developers to do all of the testing instead of Google improving their internal review standards is a joke.

Not that iOS reviews are that much better, but at least they have human reviews and people you can contact in case your app gets denied - with Google not so much.

I think we're going to see an increase F-droid/other app store and delivery by Github usage in the near future.

It's never a good idea to piss off your 3rd party developers, and at some point I would think Google will have to relent on this...we'll see.
