Ignoring experts' warnings about the severe public health risks of reopening the economy too quickly, President Donald Trump on Thursday dismissed demands that a nationwide coronavirus testing system be established and fully functional before people are sent back to work, saying it would be a "nice thing to do" but is not needed.

"No," Trump said at a press briefing when asked whether a nationwide testing system is necessary. "We have a great testing system. We have the best, right now, the best testing system in the world... There are certain sections of the country that are in phenomenal shape already. Other sections are coming online, other sections are going down."

"We want to have it, and we're going to see if we have it," Trump continued. "Do you need it? No. Is it a nice thing to do? Yes. We're talking about 325 million people."
